CLEARH2O: Wastewater Treatment and Water Reuse

Cascata d'acqua limpida

Wastewater reuse

The CLEARH2O project aims to develop innovative and sustainable solutions for the treatment of municipal and industrial wastewater, promoting the reuse of treated water.
In response to the growing need to reduce water consumption, CLEARH2O proposes an integrated approach that combines advanced biological and physico-chemical techniques.
The focus is on the removal of emerging micropollutants, which are often not eliminated by conventional methods—such as organic compounds of domestic, healthcare, and industrial origin—known for their low biodegradability and potential negative impact on ecosystems and human health.

The project involves the development of:

  1. Innovative microbial isolates capable of degrading various pollutants from both municipal and industrial wastewater, used in combination with plants in Constructed Wetland (CW) modules to improve water quality.

  2. Advanced physico-chemical treatments, including modified Fenton processes, ozonation, innovative in-situ oxidant generation, membrane filtration (reverse osmosis, nanofiltration), adsorption, and photo-oxidation.

  3. Combined treatment system, adaptable to the specific characteristics of wastewater, aimed at producing treated water suitable for industrial, agricultural, or municipal reuse.

Expected results and impacts

The project aims to enhance the efficiency of wastewater treatment processes, reduce operational costs, and minimize environmental impact, promoting a more sustainable use of water resources.
The developed solutions will have a direct impact on the quality of water intended for reuse, delivering benefits to industry, agriculture, and civil applications.

Partnerships and Collaborations:
The project involves an international consortium of specialized partners from various sectors, fostering the exchange of expertise among companies, research institutions, and public bodies.

Technological innovation

CLEARH2O represents a significant advancement in water treatment, thanks to a modular and flexible approach that can be applied to various industrial contexts, offering customized solutions for every treatment requirement.
