ATENE: Tecnologie Avanzate per la Rilevazione Predittiva dei Guasti nel Settore Oil & Gas

Predictive maintenance for the Oil & Gas industry
The ATENE project (Advanced Technologies for ENergy Exploitation) was launched in 2012 with the goal of developing advanced technologies for energy efficiency in the Oil & Gas sector. It aims to create an innovative method for automatically detecting incipient faults in instrumentation and industrial components, preventing specific failure modes in real time through telemetry data analysis. The primary objective is to minimize machine downtime, reduce costs, and optimize operational efficiency.
The Project Involves the Development of:
Diagnostic algorithms: Creation of diagnostic rules for early automatic anomaly detection with maximum lead time before failure occurs.
Algorithm validation: Testing through literature review, laboratory experiments, and telemetry data analysis provided by Nuovo Pignone.
New research infrastructures: Enhancement of specialized labs focused on aerothermodynamics, novel materials, advanced mechanics, and turbine/compressor technology validation.
Expected results and impacts:
Reduce machine downtime through timely fault detection.
Improve reliability of components and energy systems.
Strengthen diagnostic capabilities of industrial infrastructure via advanced data analysis.
Consolidate the local industrial network through collaboration among large companies, SMEs, and research centers.
Partnerships and collaborations:
The project was coordinated by GE Oil & Gas – Nuovo Pignone with support from the Tuscany Region, involving 15 partners including universities, SMEs, and research labs. The University of Florence played a central role in research coordination via the CeRTuS (Center for Research, Transfer and Advanced Training on Turbomachinery and Energy Systems).
Technological Innovation:
ATENE stands out for:
Real-time automatic detection of incipient faults.
Advanced predictive algorithms for early anomaly diagnosis.
Development of new production technologies and innovative materials for the Oil & Gas sector.
Specialized research infrastructures with labs dedicated to materials, aerothermodynamics, and advanced mechanics.
