EMDAS – Environment Monitoring Data Acquisition System

The project aims to develop an advanced monitoring solution for the automated detection of pathogens, using biosensors. The system is mobile and easy to deploy, designed for field campaigns targeting pathogens that pose risks to public health and the economy.

Project Objectives

The automatic system provides early warning detection based on solid-state biosensors to identify microbiological pathogens in liquid matrices such as:

  • Wastewater

  • Milk and/or other food matrices

System Features

The system offers real-time alerts, enabling authorities to make prompt decisions while waiting for lab confirmations.
The POC (Point-of-Care) detection system is qualitative, designed to rapidly verify the presence or absence of specific pathogens with high selectivity and speed.

Technologies & Process Innovations

The project introduces innovative technology that addresses unmet needs in pathogen detection—specifically speed and specificity.
It integrates:

  • Artificial intelligence

  • Biosensor technology

  • Full automation of both sampling and analysis processes

These advancements open new application areas, such as:

  • Public health

  • Municipal wastewater monitoring

  • Bathing water

  • Aquaculture and irrigation water

  • Complex food fluids like milk (relevant to Foodborne Illnesses – FBIs)

The key innovation is the ability to position an autonomous, automated detection unit for semi-batch analysis. The biosensor functionalization and full automation exceed current standards, which rely on specialized personnel for each analysis phase.
Current fluid-pathogen analysis can take days or weeks, requires expensive equipment (e.g., PCR), and is not readily accessible across all health or environmental control centers.
